My favourite springtime destination at my workplace , Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison , Wisconsin , is our lovely wooded Wildflower Garden .
Oaks ( Quercusspp . and cvs , Zones 4 - 10 ) , maples ( Acerspp . and cvs . , Zones 3 - 9 ) , and shellbark hickory ( Carya ovata , Zones 4 - 8) form a canopy of mottled refinement , while birch ( Betulaspp . and cvs . , Zones 2 - 9 ) and aspen ( Populusspp . and cvs . , zone 1 - 10 ) fly high adjacent to a pond . Witch hazel ( Hamamelisspp . and cvs . , Zones 3 - 8) , pagoda dogwood ( Cornusalternifolia , Zones 3 - 7 ) , redbud ( Cerciscanadensis , Zones 4 - 8) , spicebush ( Linderabenzoin , Zones 4 - 9 ) , and pawpaw ( Asiminatriloba , Zones 5 - 9 ) are dot throughout the understory , but the veridical stars are the bound - blooming ephemeron and woodland native .
Natural garden like this one are well managed with a light touch . As soon as Baron Snow of Leicester recedes , great branches and junk are pick up , and we might tidy up path edge or redistribute piles of fall leaf . We sometimes separate and move plants from well - base clunk , or thin plants that fill in sharply , push out more delicate companions . The well - established planting are so impenetrable that little weeding is necessary . I highly urge incorporating some of these lesser - known woodland gems into your spook garden . Unless otherwise noted , all prefer humus - racy but well - draining dirt and full to part tad , and they resent disturbance . Delight in the spring colour they provide when we so desperately involve it , and enjoy their surprises for years to do !

Yellow trillium (Trillium luteum, Zones 4–8) and prairie trillium (Trillium recurvatum, Zones 4–9)
We have struggled to cultivate the aeriform capital white trillium ( T. grandiflorum ) but have had great achiever with its colorful full cousin , finding volunteer plants pop up that eventually colonize . Yellow trillium ’s lime green flowers put up a refreshful counterpoint to outflow ’s pastel ; a particularly nice sketch contrast the mild vapours and pinks of lungwort ( Pulmonariaspp . and cvs . ) with yellow trillium ’s lime . Prairie wake-robin has vino red flower that lend play . Both coinage share the classic wood lily vaselike shape and have fun , speckled folio . unfeignedly short-lived , these plants benefit from companions such as ferns or sedges to cover up fading leafage .
Wood anemone (Anemone quinquefolia, Zones 4–8)
Wood sea anemone is a far-flung and beloved saltation short-lived . Locally abundant in native forests , and scatter by rhizomes , individual plants may require five twelvemonth to flower . A frequent sight is a large lump of wood anemone ’s delicately lobate leaf topped with sporadic , virginal white , five - petaled flowers rising to a height of only 6 to 8 inches . It is uncommon that we find seed for these plant for cut-rate sale , so we were thrilled to find this up - and - comer last leaping . Rarer still is a pinkish form , so keep your eyes out !
Woodland merrybells (Uvularia grandiflora, Zones 4–9)
With a common name like that , who would n’t smile ? Merrybells ’ arching shank grow to 18 column inch tall in vase - shape clumps , adopt by the unfurling of gray - green alternating leaf . The icteric , flaring blossom have a charming , drooping nature . With longer - hold up leaf than other bound natives — the leaves turn a haunt White River in the fall — this is a secure candidate for the shady border .
