At our house we use up lots of soups and stews , beans and rice , caryopsis and alimentary paste – stick to your ribs kinda food – for those of us who are choppin ’ and haulin ’ wood , stoking the woodstove and shoveling snow !

This pasta sauce first appeared inGourmet Magazinein an herbaceous plant serial ,   which I co - author with Carolyn Dille foretell “ A Calendar of Herbs ” in 1980 ! It has been prepared countless time and with many variation and still remains a family dearie .
