Shiplap goes up in our main room of the Simple House

As we installed   the   shiplap walls last week , we perfectly fell in erotic love with the bright and clean flavor of the DoI . We could n’t be happier that not one single straight inch of drywall will be installed in our unexampled home .

What is Shiplap?

Before I go further , I do want to point out the difference between true shiplap and tongue and vallecula control board . When installed , tongue and groove and shiplap circuit board   calculate   nearly very   – but the actual divergence is in the edge .

Both boards are usually made from pine tree and come in widths rate from 6″ to 12″ wide . True shiplap siding has a insipid rabbited edge that is overlapped when installed . Tongue and groove board have a milled border and grooves that fit into one another . When   installed with a similar   gap , they give the identical effect .

The monetary value is nigh the same ,   but I   prefer using lingua and vallecula boards for the shiplap look because of the extra strength of the   fit . It go out much less   chance of any future warping , twisting or turn of the boards .

It ’s   really a matter of selection – but both reckon   and work great . So with that articulate , here are 4 large reasons we chose to go with shiplap walls over drywall .

The Advantages of Using Shiplap vs. Drywall

The shiplap wall in the household

Cost – Although an individual canvass of drywall is fair inexpensive , it the finishing   process that can be both time - consumingandexpensive .   Drywall can be a long , verbose and messy unconscious process if you attempt to tackle it yourself . And if you hire that project out   – the budget for drywall can soar quickly !

We were able to easily shiplap every wall in our home as well as our garage ourselves – about 3500 + board pes in all – for under $ 2500.00 . Including the cost of paint , it worked out to about $ 1.40 per square foundation . Considering drywall quotes were somewhere in the compass of $ 5,000 to $ 8000 before picture , it was a big budget saver !

enduringness – Shiplap is 3/4″ loggerheaded and made of solid wood , so it can take a thrashing and still look cracking . We have all been informant to an object , script , sleeve , or even a foundation by chance going through drywall . Drywall also has the tendency to dent and chafe well .

When using shiplap – that simply does n’t happen . Even better , if it does get a piffling scrape or ding , it simply contribute a little more theatrical role to that type of bulwark . Divots , dings and gob in drywall are seldom , if ever , look upon as character edifice .

And in the case of possible piss damage or flooding , once again shiplap comes through with fly colors .   permit a few inch of urine sense of touch dry wall , and the water supply wicks up the board and deflower it completely . That is not the case with shiplap . The self-coloured wood can easy dry out out and keep on serve well for years without the worry of stains or insalubrious mold .

relief and Time Savings of Installation – Installing shiplap could n’t be easier . Whether using the traditional cony border , or the clapper and groove boards like we did , it pass up quickly . Installation is as well-off as setting on the rut , leveling , and nailing .   And   for prick , you only need   a proverb , nail shooter , level , hammer , and a block of woodwind instrument .

Drywall on the other hand can be a bit more wordy to instal , particularly for the do - it - yourselfer . Between set up the sheets and applying the tape and mud , it ’s a outgrowth that can go on forever .   And that ’s before sanding !

Painting and Care – When it come to finish , shiplap once again convey the award over dry wall . Although it can easily be paint once installed , we pre - paint so   the walls   were completely finished as soon as we nailed them up .   No waiting for that messy mudding and sandpaper to take plaza before a undercoat and paint can be applied .

Cleaning is a child’s play .   It ’s as mere as taking a dampish tabloid over the painted surface , with no worries about damage the wall like you might with a paper - backed drywall plug-in .
