When you have a family of four , two low dogs , and a backyard the size of a postage stamp , you either move elsewhere or feel a way to make the space work and accommodate the outdoor activities your mob enjoys . The proprietor of this household in Piedmont , CA , choose to do the latter and transform their cramp , badly project maculation of land into an outdoor living country broad enough for everyone .
“ We were tasked with doing the most with this small backyard and offer features for everyone in the category to apprise , ” sound out Michael McFadden landscape architect and father of Planted Earth Inc. , Berkeley , CA . “ The design challenge was to expand an exist tile terrace so the space could function as an outdoor aliveness room . Designing a fresh entry gate and replace the existing stairs from a public sidewalk to the rarefied backyard — without consuming too much cherished quad — was a further objet d’art of the mystifier . ”
Creating Privacy

By removing the existing patio , enlarging the distance , and resurface it with plank tile flooring , McFadden was able to create a furnished outdoor living room that serve as an elongation of the indoor distance . “ The live patio was too small , oddly designed , and did n’t run as an outdoor support way like the client wanted . Renovating it to make a well-heeled and enjoyable outer space was the gist of the design challenge for the whole task . ”
The key to making it all oeuvre was to provide privacy and seclude the surface area from the nearby public sidewalk . This was done by installing a retain wall and relocating the stairs and logic gate between the public sidewalk and backyard .

Building a Living Wall

The exist backyard included a patch of artificial turf integrate into a narrow , awkward masonry ledge that was part of a footing to back up an unsightly retaining wall . By cladding the wall with a live stratum of succulents and inflorescence perennial , resurface the narrow landing , and installing a spa and new stone - slab steps lead up to it , McFadden make two levels of functional out-of-door blank space and a lovely vertical garden .
