Silver in Winter, and in Shade

Winter , broadly speaking speaking , is not a nurseryman ’s friend . However , I must admit , when the first freeze hit — or even a dusting of snowfall — the effect on my garden is witching . It ’s something that here in New England I bet forwards to each year . The agency the plant seem like they ’ve been sprinkled with the all right iridescent glitter is a sight that nourish me throughout the coming months of non-white boringness .

Perhaps that ’s why I love silver variegate plant so much . Their ability to copy that early winter illusion — year one shot — is so beguiling . And when you put that trait into a industrial plant that thrive in the dark and sometimes dingy wraith , it ’s even better . unluckily , I only have a short few silver variegated shade plants . But after read Frank Fitzgerald ’s articleSilver in the Shadein ourmost recent issue , my spring shopping leaning produce exponentially . Among his suggestions is ‘ Sea Heart ’ brunnera , a Modern cultivar known for being a more vigorous works than the better known ‘ Jack Frost ’ brunnera . And while that alone would guarantee its position on my shopping inclination , ‘ Sea Heart ’ also tolerates warmth and humidity quite well , meaning its effervescent silver - green leave-taking wo n’t crisp up like my other brunneras in summertime .
