Taking advantage of the time to plant and garden
Today ’s photos make out from Karen Howe , who is share some of the thing she ’s been up to during this class of staying home and stay put safe .
I garden on a shady hillside in Portland , Oregon , where I have plenty of rainwater but limited sun and gravid mud soil . I ’ve beenimproving the soilfor 25 years and tally morenative plantsin the last few years to improve habitat for my avian protagonist . This year I ’ve been at house more and with less work than usual , so I ’ve had fun with low - price projects , some inspire by article inFine Gardeningmagazine .
These beautiful dun lilies(Erythronium revolutum)cheered me in March when we started sheltering in place . They spread generously each year , so I labour many of them and gave them to friends and neighbors .

I have trouble growingtulipsin my heavy soil , so I tried embed someTulipa‘Purple Reflection ’ ( zone 3–8 ) in pots outside my kitchen windowpane . I love the way of life they complemented the white bleeding heart(Dicentraspectabilis‘Alba ’ , Zones 3–9 ) .
I ’ve been try out with growing comestible the last few days and have tot up some newraised - seam plantersin my sunny corner . It was fun tostart seedsindoors for the first time with the help of a newfangled light-emitting diode grow spark in my basement .
I buy some mail - fiat perennials and updated an uninventive share of my garden with the addition of violets(Viola‘Etain ’ zone 4–8 ) and anemones(Anemone‘Ruffled Swan ’ , Zones 6 – 8) , which pair off well with exist paint fern and a sculptured stone that was given to me last year . The violets surprised me by blooming all through the summer .

After struggling with cold soil and dumb drain in one of my bed , I ultimately dug it all up , bestow wad ofcompost , and replanted in a lime - and - burgundy strategy that I just love . I planted heucheras(Heuchera‘Lime Marmalade ’ and ‘ Midnight Rose ’ , Zones 4–9 ) , amber sedges(Carexelata‘Bowles Golden ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , a few variegatedhostas(Hosta fortunei‘Aureo Marginata ’ andHosta‘Sum and Substance ’ , Zones 3–9 ) , and a volunteerJapanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zones 5–9 ) .
I have a bed of mixed dahlias(Dahliavariabilis , Zones 8–9 or as sensitive bulbs ) that bloom attractively all summer . I would often think of a neighbor in need of sunniness and I ’d cut a fragrancy , put it in a canning jolt , and drop it on their porch as a little surprise . This cheered me up on many a thought-provoking 24-hour interval .
Based on a GPOD about “ stumperies ” from August , I was inspire to build a stumpery at the back of my garden . I had fun decorating it with moss , bark , andwoodland peak . I want to leave home ground for the lovely bugs that abide the Sir Henry Joseph Wood and become food for thought for birds .
