Days to Spring: 2
I have always call up red - blistering poker ( Kniphofiaspp . and cvs . , Zones 6 - 9 ) were striking plants . Their unequalled peak always pull attention , but they were always orange , or shades of it . I find orange hard to work with , so I have look up to red - red-hot pokers in other the great unwashed ’s garden .
The past several yr have seen the introduction of several new cultivars in various shades of icteric , a color I do know how to use and seek out quite often for my purpose . We have been growing Lemon Popsicle ( Kniphofia‘TNKNILP ’ , Zones 6 - 9 ) in theFine GardeningTest Garden for at least six years ( I believe ) , and it has yarn-dye me with its scummy maintenance needs and reliable blooms . Why it never pass to me to append it to my plate garden is beyond me .
But this twelvemonth I am append it . It gets somewhat above a pes grandiloquent and wide , likes it live and dry , and salad days from mid - summer to fall . We have given it fond sunshine ; middling , acidic soil ; and no real upkeep and it has done just all right .

Perhaps there have always been varieties of Kniphofia that were not orangish , and I have only become aware of them . But now that I know they do n’t have to be searing - hot orange , I will be adding as many of these nerveless flora to my garden as I can .
