As I write this it appears that most of you over there are shudder as temperature plummet all over the place . It never gets much colder here than about 10 degrees centigrade so I have no mind what it sense like to cope with minus 30 or 40 . trust it warm up up a bit before long .
The knock on effect over here ( a circle of our weather condition comes 2nd - hand from you ) has been a couple of hebdomad of intermittent but quite red , rainstorms . The coastal towns have had it bad as the wafture clobber ocean wall and big lubber of rock are battered into rubble .
Inland , where I am , it is merely wet .

The ground is waterlogged and the ditches full , fat raindrops are running down the windows and the gutter are , in some position , not up to the job . I eff that most of the rest of the world regard the British conditions with wry entertainment and bear it to be always raining but this is something else . I theorise that pelting is right than the thick fog that used to envelop London – as those of you conversant with Sherlock Holmes and Charles Dickens will be aware . Known as peasoupers , the air was so thick as to be unintelligible , this was the side consequence of thousands of houses burning cheesy ember , industry belching out more smoke and the exhaust fumes of cars and lorry . The bad recorded was in 1952 in which an estimated 4,000 multitude buy the farm . As a solvent of this the political science passed the clean air act in 1956 which banish the habit of ember and direct London towards using electrical energy or flatulence for the majority of its domestic warming . The Chinese are in the same boat now as we were sixty years ago .
Enough of that , I am supposed to be writing about rain … .
It is at times like this that I am quite thankful that I no longer spend all my days building things and fossicking around in the mud and or else have the option to stay indoors publish loose prose for you band .

So from this stance of snug waterlessness – with a cup of tea and a generous piece of Christmas cake easily within reach – I settle that it might be interesting to intend of Eleven Things We Like About Rain .
1 . Obviously the first is because if we had no pelting then we , and all our gardens , would not exist .
2 . I often hold that annoying , summer rain . You know , the rainfall that light upon picnics and spoil May marriage . The grounds is that without some summertime rain we would not be lucky enough to have the form of garden we are lucky enough to have in Britain . By July our gardens would be gasping , our lawns as ironic as a dusty Clarence Shepard Day Jr. in Addis Ababa and our plants wilting and dispirited . We take and should welcome summer rainwater .

3 . The sound of stormy rainfall battering against roof and windows is always a ease : offer you are inside and not stranded out on some blasted Heath in a King Lear sort of way .
4 . Sometimes it is good to just get really wet . Not just a minute damp but so wet that you have to wring the water from your underwear and pour it from your boots . confessedly this sort of tomfoolery is respectable in the summer when you are less probable to catch pneumonia . Even better if you do it in the tropical zone .
5 . Without rain there would be no puddles and without puddle there would be no puddle rise . That would be a disaster .

6 . On the depicted object of lawn : in particular browned crispy ones . One of the cracking marvel of horticulture is to learn pelting falling upon them and , after a remarkably shortsighted time , to see them regain their greenness . Like watching a miracle cure .
7 . Proper torrents of pee whooshing and whirl down humble watercourse carrying sticks and all before them . Nothing imperil , just a sort of headfirst rushing like a hungry horde of marmosets fall upon a banana .
8 . The Egyptian Goddess of Rain was called Tefnut which , roughly translated , means “ Sky - Spittle ” . Her Babylonian equivalent was Ningirsu . The Greeks had a bunch of nymph who were called the Hyades ( Rainy unity ) . In The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy there was a camion number one wood called Rob McKenna who , although he did not know it , was a Rain God .

9 . I know a short poem about rain … .
“ The rainfall it raineth upon the just
And also on the unjust fella :

But mostly on the just , because
The unfair stole the just ’s umbrella . ” written by Charles Bowen .
10 . A typical American / Brit utilise about176 gallons of water a day . The average Africanfamily use 5 Imperial gallon a sidereal day . We are much better of with it than without it .

11 . The rubric of this web log comes from the Hal David / Burt Bacharach song . The B.J.Thomas version used in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid . Paul Newman was bicycle around with Katherine Ross on his handlebar . The film come out in 1969 , I must have seen it a couple of long time later when I was about twelve . Katherine Ross was probably the first woman with whom I cut down in honey : entirely and totally bowl over .
