Making a garden from grass and weeds

Julie Prince is sharing her Albany , Georgia , garden with us today .

My garden is in southwest Georgia and is considered a Zone 8 . Some long time it could be a tropic zone and others a zone or two cold . Always a challenge and never a certainty . The garden is about two years older and was begin on what was a plot of pot and skunk in an area argue in around a pocket billiards .

After we each lose our married person , my hubby and I married on 9 - 19 - 19 . I sold my home and moved to his farm . We have whole recreate not only the garden but also the mansion . The last two years have been very busy !

The garden was make using many plants that I moved from my previous garden , include some bush , perennials , and seeds collected from some annuals . Grass and weeds were murder , and a heavymulchof true pine straw was laid . After several weeks I begin to plant , improving the soil in each kettle of fish with good soil andcompost . The existingsoilis hard bolshy , rockyclay . You will see vast rock in the picture of thewater feature . These were removed from the area where the pool was built . My husband made the water system feature using an sure-enough syrup tympani that had been used as a water trough in a moo-cow grazing land ! In increase to thebirds(including many hummingbirds ) , butterflies , and moths , my dogs enjoy the garden .

There is a wide variety of flora , include several mixed bag ofSalvia , which are a favorite of the hummingbirds . I have amilkweed plant(Asclepias)that attracts the butterflies . The monarch caterpillars dine on my bronze leafage fennel(Foeniculumvulgare‘Purpureum ’ , Zones 4–9 ) and dill weed(Anethumgraveolens , one-year ) . TheRudbeckiaare bee magnets . The birds delight perching on ( what I think to be ) ‘ Black Stockings ’ fountain grass(Pennisetum‘Black stocking ’ , Zones 8–10 or as an annual ) . It has grown to over 10 feet and towers over the arbor engraft with star jasmine(Trachelospermum jasminoides , zone 7–10 ) .

The garden has developed over the last two year around the pool .

The purple foliage ofTradescantiapallida‘Purpurea ’ ( zone 7–10 or as an one-year ) adds contrast to the flowers in this bed .

The silver leaves of lambs ’ ears(Stachysbyzantina , Zones 4–10 ) takes center stage here .

Black stockings fountain grass make a dramatic argument . What an incredible industrial plant ! Though only hardy to Zone 8 , this can be grow as an yearbook in colder climates .

A container of stamp succulents makes a nice stress in the garden .
