Dear Readers ,
The hay bale garden took some time to get going due to the cold weather and the need to keep it moist .
It is worth take down that the straw underneath the top level will be a brown - black color as the decomposition build and mushrooms may be present as you dig or sprout on top of the Basel . The mushrooms should not be eat on and should be removed and either tot to the compost pile or trash can . ( Remember , never eat wild mushrooms unless you could categorically discover the species and that it is secure to do so , there are more poisonous mushroom species than there are eatable ones ) .

Potato plant growing in the haybale
The biodynamic garden hay bales had some grass / corn / barleycorn pullulate on the top of the Basle which was easily pull out every couple of days . Once these sprouts were removed , we decided to plant up these bales . We chose potatoes , three red skinned potatoes from the grocery store which had chitted in the cupboard and three purple peel / fleshed spud which we had purchased from our local nursery and implant on a origin day after watering the bales with biodynamic preparation 507 ( valerian tea ) then spraying the Basle with biodynamic grooming 500 .
To imbed in the bale , comprehend a hole in the stalk ; I care to pile the straw next to the hole and dig up with my hand . Once you have the cakehole deep enough ; place a bit of compost / pot soil in the hole then institute your potato on top . We then filled the fix with more compost since potatoes are grabby feeders . pass over the hole with the husk you remove from the hole .
In JimJim ’s garden , we planted bush beans on the top edges of the Basle with corn and squashes on the top of the bale . We plant a mixture of seedlings and seed in a picayune compost to see if planting seedlings is good than planting seeds in this type of garden . The squash were a mixture of those sown from seed and single we found growing in the compost bin when we go to add more kitchen waste product to it !

In this photo , you’re able to see that the bale has pullulate Gunter Wilhelm Grass or barley seeds in it which need pull out . In the biodynamic garden , the remotion of the weeds would be done on on a fruit Clarence Day grant to the biodynamic calendar . To the right in the photo above you could see the broccoli and cauliflower growing in JimJim ’s garden with some chard grow next to it .
When we planted this bale , we parted the stubble and added some compost and plant semen and seedling directly into the compost .
The bales once plant will need regular lachrymation and feeding to pop with and may need feast if some deficiencies lay out themselves on the plants as they raise .

Red skinned potatoes in haybale
We ’ve misplace two purple potato flora to slugs , we thought that the yellowing leaves were an indication that they were in need of a high atomic number 7 fertilizer .
It turns out that the stalks were eaten and we suspect slugs or slater to be the culprits , for now the second purplish potato flora is scarcely give ear on and we ’re feed it regularly to see if we can pull it through .
