So yeah , this spring , I ’m definitely covering the basics : courgette , cabbage , pelf , love apple , radishes . Duh . But even though I have a roster of tried - and - lawful veggies and fruits , I fear falling into a gardening heat , trudging the same old zukes and cukes and butter lettuces out to the dinner board ; serving up a platter of plain reddened Lycopersicon esculentum . Delicious , sure , but kind of like have only one dress to wear to parties .

Just as much as I am compelled to claw through penny-pinching stores look for just the right quirky party garb , I finger a strong urge to venture into the world of weirdo gardening . So in my semen arsenal , alongside the faithful understudy , I ’ve also got some grey-haired and orangish Kabocha squash semen , a packet of stevia , and four kernel of Iroquois snowy Zea mays . The corn is largely a emblematical planting , as edible corn really needs to be planted in larger plot of land in ordering to produce . EvenIknow that .

I ’m also plan a medicinal drug garden : chamomile , Inula helenium , hyssop , echinacea and calendula . I have a big mess of beeswax , coconut oil colour and some other stuff just await for herb so they can turn into lotions and balms .

When I ’m setting out industrial plant starts , I ’ll be save space for a bandage of lemongrass oil . Rumor has it , you may just take the clobber you get at the grocery stock , snip off a bit from the last , stick ’em in a shabu of water until they sprout , slap ’em into the garden , and bammo ! Siamese solid food for days . Folks in zone too cold for lemongrass oil can even grow it indoors , harmonize to the little imp who live in the net .

My freak flag is also flying proudly above my novel fruit trees . I ’ve incur young pomegranate tree and true guava bush and my new favorite : a pineapple quince bush .

I look at it this way of life : Anyone can walk into the food market computer storage and grab a dish of Granny Smiths , but you ca n’t find Gravensteins or cider apples or quinces . When was the last time you try quince bush sirup ? Never , you say ? And what the heckisa quince bush ? Well , a quince may look like a very horrible , chunky , grueling apple , but it grows on a beautiful , fragrant tree , and when you slice and poach them with cinnamon stick and vanilla , the poach slices make a heavy pie , and the poach liquid can be boil down into an amazing pinkish syrup that goes great over a stack of pancakes or ice ointment , or in a Bourbon dynasty cocktail . Who knew ?

So this give , I ’m branching out ( observe the clever gardening punning ) . I ’ll be looking for quirky heirloom variety of Joe Average vegetables and fruit , and trying things I ’ve never even heard of . Why plant unpatterned lettuce when you could spread out a handful of Red - Streaked Mizuna seeds ? And while the good ol’ orange carrot is a dandy , how about a empurpled or white variety ?

I in full expect some epic fails . But I envision if I hedge my wager , somethingis really gon na take off . Weirdo crop just might sour out to be cash crop , too . And mayhap , just possibly , I ’ll end up with that elusive idealistic harvest : delicious , strange , worthy , expensive , and with the vigour of kudzu . Maybe it will even cover my expenses for all the observational plants I will down . We ’ll see .
