Gasterias   are often group withHaworthiabecause the plants have similar cultural requirements . Both are attractive , diminished succulent that can tolerate more tint than many , making them more suitable as houseplant . However , Gasterias are susceptible to fungal infection , ordinarily come out as black spots on the leave . These result from too much humidity or water on the leaves , but they should not broadcast too quickly . Gasterias have a natural defense mechanism against such fungous flak and attack the invading organism and seal off the wounded berth . Generally , any space whereHaworthiaandAloethrive will be hospitable to aGasteria .

Gasterias are small , shoal - root , and comparatively slow - growing . Therefore , they are often mature in small clusters in broad , shallow dishes . Over time , cluster will by nature enlarge as the mother plant commit off lowly plantlets . When the cluster has outgrown its container , repot into a new wide and shallow container with freshpotting soilin the spring or former summer . This is also the time to take offsets for propagation .

Depending on the species , Gasteriacan be propagated at repotting fourth dimension using kickoff from the female parent works or leaf cuttings .
