What get with an unnamed cactus on a windowsill , has grown into a line of work that spans almost one hectare , with nine big greenhouses , and three internal collections .

" It all protrude at the long time of 11 years , when my Mum took me shopping and I blemish a marvellous develop cactus that I need to drop my pocket money on " , Daniel Jackson of Ottershaw Cacti ( whose preferent cactus happens to be ‘ Mother in law ’s shock absorber ’ or ‘ Golden Barrel ’ ) , remembers . " To this day even cactus experts who have visit my nursery can not name this plant that I still have . My collection of plant produce as my space increase from my sleeping accommodation windowsill to a small greenhouse in my parents ' garden , then to my first large nursery at our first base . When we move to Ottershaw we inherit 9 magnanimous greenhouse , and ever since I have enjoyed filling them with all sorts of cacti and other succulent . Currently we have 2.25 acres of farming half filled with glass , so plenty of room to expand should I be allowed ! "

Own fertilizer and seedGrowing cacti is on the whole quite straightforward , Daniel explain : slew of light , gritty compost , regular lacrimation in the summer and minuscule or no watering in the wintertime , and re - potting every class as they run out of food for thought .

Speaking of food , Ottershaw Cacti develop their own peculiarly produced plant food , which has aid to promote the colour , spination and flowering of the plant . " This has become so sought after that we now sell it at the shows . "

As for the starting material - Daniel pollinate his own plant and collect his own seed . He has to be deliberate though , " to ensure I have produced pure seed and any concerned bees have not sweep contaminated my batches " . To achieve this , he wraps the pollinated blossom in cling film to prevent any cross contamination , or loss of seed when the seminal fluid bud burst . Other succulents propagate well from thinning , he explains , like Echeverias , Crassulas and Sedums .

National CollectionsAll that hard work does n’t just go into the sales event of cacti - Daniel also holds three national collection – Astroloba , Gasteria and Haworthia . " I inherited these collection from Robert Scott , who is a close personal acquaintance and my first employer . I used to run these ingathering when Rob first buy them and now have full duty for their twenty-four hours to day care . "

Hard work , but rewardingThis year Daniel and Jo Jackson were at Chelsea again . " We really enjoy doing the RHS display " , Daniel plowshare . " Whilst it is heavy physical work , Jo and I feel it rewarding , so we trust to continue for as long as we can . " In addition to continuing with the shows , they ’re also search an net clientele , so they can deal their plants with as many citizenry as potential . " As our children grow and become more main , we hope to have more time to pass growing and selling cacti and other succulents . "

Speaking of the future , they ’re not really worried about Brexit . " We are 99 % self sufficient in the replication of our sale plant , this is something we have felt strongly about and have worked towards with or without Brexit . We have also had some success in producing new hybrids and feel we can / should always produce something new for succulent fans . "

Look out for the first new Aeonium ‘ Nights Watch ’ , which Ottershaw Cacti launched at RHS Chelsea this year .
