The difficulties and pleasures of a tropical climate
Today we ’re inflict Lillian Miller ’s garden in St. Petersburg , Florida .
I have gardened in Italy ; Germany ; Tacoma , Washington ; and the Berkshire Hills in Massachusetts . Now I am retired , but this is the most difficult place to garden because of the year - round passion and miserable , sandy filth . Despite that , industrial plant prosper , annuals become perennial , and everything is lifelike and grows to be huge .
The whole garden is also filled with looming oak tree trees and line by an old brick road , so although it ’s red-hot , there is sufficient shade . horticulture is a wondrous activity any clip , but it is really spirit - supporting during retreat , pandemic , and intense heat .

casting - atomic number 26 plants(Aspidistra elatior , Zones 7–10 ) withvariegated foliage , backed by a philodendron with bright orangish fresh leaves . All of these make cracking houseplants in climates where it is too inhuman for them to subsist out of doors .
Monsteradeliciosais another plant comfortably known as a houseplant in most arena , but in Florida it can live outside , get immense , and even create these unusual - look blossom .
A royal bromeliad backed by the coloured leaves of a Codiaeum variegatum ( Codiaeumvariegatum ) .

More crotons and othercolorful foliageplants make a bright display in the spectre of the oak .
This tall ruby-red Chinese pagoda clerodendrum ( Clerodendrumpaniculatum ) is practically a sess in Florida , growing vigorously and well .
Variegatedpandanus ( Pandanusutilis ) is strike backed by the pink - blossom medinilla bush , which is slight if not water enough .

Masses of crotons make a durable , long - lasting , colorful show outside in frost - free climate , and they are great houseplants or annual in cold climes .
