I think the end of January officially qualifies as “ the dead of winter , ” and for a lot of us , it ’s a meter of year when we seldom consider of growing plants . It ’s the most extreme season in the garden when it comes to coldness … Or is it ? Coming off one of the worst drought year in the U.S. since the Dust Bowl of the 1930s , some might disagree , and they ’d have a head .
Of course , flora always endure in some capacity , no matter how we humanity fare in uttermost position . The effect is that for us is that where plants endure , gardeners endure too . In this episode , “ Fire and Ice , ” we look at plant and the people acquire them in very different , very extreme portion . In the first one-half , I ’ll spill the beans to Darryl Seidel , whose garden we featured previouslyhere atFine Gardeningin the Garden Photo of the Day . Darryl deal the greenhouse at Australia ’s Davis Station in Antarctica , and I ’ll sing to him about the challenge of produce plants on the cold , driest continent on dry land – and in winter , no less . After that , Debra Lee Baldwin , source ofSucculent Container Gardensand the upcomingSucculents Simplified , tells the write up of how a champion accredit succulent industrial plant for saving her home from Southern California ’s vicious wildfire of 2007 .
It ’s an extreme episode of Garden Confidential this month ! We hope you ’ll hear in .
