Highlights from the end of May
Today ’s photograph are from Joe in northern Indiana .
Mayhas ended , and hot , dry conditions has arrived ; it formally feels like summer in the garden . But the last few bits of spring have been beautiful . Here are some of my favorites from the last hebdomad of May .
I planted a LOT of these white Iceland poppies(Papaverhybrid , Zones 3–8 ) last year , butrabbitsate all but this one ( sigh ) . At least this one is beautiful , and I think a fox or something has moved into the neighborhood because I ’ve see far fewer rabbits this year .

I inherit thispeonywhen I buy my house . It was buried under weeds and not thriving , but I crystallise the arena and affect it to a sunnier place , and it is now bloom ! I imagine it is the old heirloom varietyPaeonia‘Alba Plena ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) .
This is n’t my garden , but one I walk by with my dog the other day . Wow — just an unbelievable planting of bearded irises(Irishybrids , Zones 3–8 ) .
Here ’s another dig from a pass around my neighborhood , this one of a beautybush(Kolkwitziaamabilis , zona 4–8 ) . It is an one-time - fashioned shrub I never see for cut-rate sale any more , but the older neck of the woods in town have a lot of them . It look so incredible in bloom , but is n’t much to look at the repose of the year .

Therosesare just getting started . I do n’t have a name for this little one , but I really care it .
I have sandy soil , so lot of penstemons are well-chosen here , including thisPenstemonheterophyllus‘Electric Blue ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) . I adore the color of this one .
As usual , the one-year poppies(Papaver hybridum)I carefully grow from germ are still little , but this one , which self - sowed from last year , is huge and load with smart as a whip orangish flower . It seeded itself in good order in the front of the bed , stymie everything behind it , but it is so pretty I do n’t have the heart to pull it out .
