I pluck a quiet lemon tree and trend it into spicy wedges to share with my husband .   I mean we both expect this lemon tree to taste extraordinary and it does – fresh , yes , and extraordinarily glowering !

The next daylight I discover something else as we take the air the locality .   Too many masses permit their fruit go un - harvest here , just like at abode , where each fall I mourn the countless apples left to rot around our rural area .

Grapefruits and oranges molder on trees and drop to the land ; a fresh , free , nutritious harvest snuff it to dissipation .   I ’m dismayed , thinking of starving children in Africa , the price of citrus tree at dwelling , the vanishing water fed to those fruit trees in this desert surround .   Worse , I know I ’ve been hangdog of consume good food myself .

When friends of my parents , snow bunting fly northwards again , kindly provide to let us pluck from their prolific backyard orchard , we leap at the luck .   We ’re greeted by delightful grapefruit the size of softballs , glowing stinker and orange .
