It ’s been so long since I ’ve exist in the country that I had forget how cervid can literally wreak compete garden end overnight . Our move to Hawk Hill in June has since jogged my memory . At our new business firm we have a fence in kitchen garden ( lovingly dubbed “ the potager ” ) that ’s — gratefully — thread with red-hot conducting wire . In the fall , there ’s a lot less groceries out there to fill their little deer mouths … they’ve even taken to nibbling my Moss Rose ( portulaca ) , a tender succulent . In early summertime my citrus trees were beneath their discriminate roof of the mouth . Come descent , they ’ve now become a finesse . I still find out deer beautiful and mellifluous to check , but in the air I can palpate a quiet war come on — and I ’m not have that gain feeling . So , I ’ve begin asking my deer - mollify neighbors .
