Like many multitude , I sporadically enjoy scrolling through social medium to admire gardens . It ’s a grand way to get a quick back breaker of beauty and to discovernew industrial plant . During my scroll some time ago , I paused on a pic of an otherworldly see flower . It was visually vulgar yet elegantly poise on supportive stems . I take over that the architectural flower and iridescence were merely Photoshopped triumphs . I later learned I had seen the literal lot — a glimmering variety of recurrent ocean holly ( Eryngiumplanumspp . and cvs . , Zones 5–9 ) . This particular cultivar is called ‘ Blue Glitter ’ , and I was eager to see it in person .

As its coarse name designate , this plant prefers conditions that you ’d find seaside : sunny billet with sharply draining soil . This bring in it an eclectic solution to some tricky planting locations . It does best up to Zone 8 ; however , it will conform to Zone 9 as long as the conditions are dry .

The spiky pincushion flowers come along in summertime and are regarded for their unequaled silver bract . They make interesting cut flowers and dry beautifully . The peak alsoattract pollinatorsand are tolerant topests , diseases , deer , and rabbits .

The extremely structural stalk reach maturity date by their 2d class and make a nice add-on to a formal or naturalistic garden . When I finally did see ‘ Blue Glitter ’ in person , it was in a prairie garden near a nature center of attention , thriving along the broad side of a building . Not surprisingly , a drift of this sea holly is an arresting deal , glittering in both grain and color with a metallic radiancy present in the tripping immature fresh growth as well as the cured blue - light-green leaves later in the gardening time of year . ‘ Blue Glitter ’ can be cut back hard in late fall or left for winter pursuit . The flower headspring work almost blackened and are dramatic against a snowy background and with inactive decorative grasses . Whether you are front for structure , color , or a distinctive efflorescence , this plant has a lot to offer .
