I have never hate a pest quite as much as the Squash Borer , Melittia cucurbitae . They are not just simple annoying garden pest . They are the epitome of evil that cause full destruction and demise of otherwise perfectly beautiful ,   productive industrial plant .

These loathsome black and ruby-red flying insects will lay eggs on squeeze plant around the time the plants reach their mature size of it and start to bloom . This happens to precisely coincide with the time that nurseryman get down to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment gazing upon their lush green garden . Then , BAM ! The ball hatch , and nasty little larva bore into the al-Qaida of the vines to begin feast and destroying . Our pristine other Summer garden are of a sudden plagued with sickly looking wilted squash . The lilliputian eggs and harmless looking adult commonly go unnoticed . So , by the fourth dimension the damage is done , it is commonly , too later to spare the vine .   When borer damage vines are examined , hole surrounding by what appears to sawdust are found near the base of the plants . The disgusting punch like larva that cause the damage are ordinarily out of ken , blithely nestled in the hollow out out vines .

The following link can help oneself you check more about the life cycle of these evil prick .

So how did I beat the borers ? I did n’t . Instead of obsess over killing them or altering their life history oscillation . I decide to plan the Summer garden believe that there would in fact be borers and they would not be stopped . Variety selection and timing were planned accordingly and we ended up harvesting mountain of curcubits . I felt like a winner when I cooked with and blogged about our delicious squash vine ( Stuffed Patty Pan with Prosciutto and Chanterellesand late sharedGolden Nugget : a Perfect Winter Squash ) . I be after on growing plenty more crush this Summer using the same planning as last year .

How to really beat the borer or grow squeeze no matter of them

Careful garden planning is definitely the near way deal with squash vine borers . I ’d rather spend more clip enjoying Summer , and less time on   hands and knees in the garden performing surgery on squash vine . My neighbor probably still opine I ’m screwball .
