It ’s a mast year for oak , and we have a magnificent harvest of acorns this year where I live in primal Manitoba ! It ’s also a with child meter to see if we can improve upon the genetics of these trees for human ingestion . ordinarily , acornsare considered too bitter for eating and involve particular preparation . But some type ( some even from single trees ) prove to be more honeyed , larger and less acerbic .
There are a lot of understanding we ’d consider world of a more eatable acorn highly desirable . Oaks have inherent time value for hardwood baseball bat , shade on the farm for livestock , windbreaks , habitat for native speciesand more . The various tree species are drought insubordinate and can tolerate a smorgasbord of soil and environmental conditions . They rise across North America , and we all have some diversity we call native to our dwelling house region !
Acorns as Food?
With all these oak tree , it ’s fair to wonder why there is n’t a commercial acorn industry . The answer : We have n’t selectively bred oak for food .
But … why not?The principal reason is the craw ’s inconsistency , as a mast year ( or bumper craw ) for acorns only come about every two to five years .
Another chief broker is the acorn’sbitterness , though some types of oaks — snowy oaks mainly , like swampland , Oregon and Burr — do have sweeter flesh . Most acorns can be rendered sweeter with processing , but a sweet-flavored acorn correctly off the tree is much better for the future of this repeated food craw .

A Citizen Initiative
So this fall , in honor of the bumper crop of acorns , I have take to the streets on my longboard to take in acorns from option tree diagram across urban Winnipeg . I am identify the size , abundance and bouquet of acorn from single tree and plantation , and my team and I are logging this data point in our Edible Biodiversity database .
Any grove or Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree of exceptional importance gets a unequaled ID number . We then make disk of the calibre and amount of the acorns .
Did I mention how fun this scientific endeavour is ? I am skate the street on aCruiser skateboard — a little profile than my usual longboard but with a panoptic and tough 9.9 - inch deck . This allows me to easily make aloofness between trees in good clip and provides the stability to carry my acorn - collecting pocketbook over my shoulder . I can also swap the shorter pack of cards onto my back when I move between the oak in a grove .

A Good Oak
So far , I have ground some exceptional oak both in parks and along streets , especially on the west side of the city . Of these we have chosen three groves that exhibit special sweetness . These will be sorted and gamy graded to plant out across the metropolis in micro - living laboratory task .
What do I take care for in a good oak tree orchard ? First , I note if the trees look healthy . I also look for beat branches in the canopy . I immortalise the size of it of the trees and if they are producing a large harvest from a smaller or older tree . I also note the following :
Keep posted for more nutty comestible biodiversity escapade !
